Memorandum
From: University of Buea Students’ Union
To:     Minister of Higher Education
          Senior State Counsel, BUEA
          Vice-Chancellor, UB

ARBITRALLY ARREST OF THE STUDENTS’ COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, MR. EYONGETTA STANLEY NJIEASSAM

We write to notify you and complain bitterly of the arrest of Mr. Eyongetta Stanley Njieassam, Chairman of the University of Buea Students’ Union Council at a call box station Molyko at 7:20 pm on Tuesday 8th Febraury 2011. Cameroon is a state of law and such must be maintained. This arrest runs contrary to Sections 23 and 30 (4) of the Cameroon Penal Code. Mr. Stanley has been undergoing interrogations for over six hours at the Judicial Police in Buea during the wee hours of the Night. This is grossly against the Justice and Peace the Head of State H.E Paul Biya is preaching. Such Unlawful arrest coming at a time Human Right officers are in the Country to assess the Human Rights situation of the Country is really disgusting.

The Students’ Union over the past few months has been very vocal on the ills the University Administration has been doing on Campus and consequently the Chairman Mr. Stanley and a host of Council Executives has been very vocal on these issues. Recently Mr. Stanley has been a victim of victimization wherein he was unjustly suspended by the Vice-Chancellor and all type of ill-fated lies have been fabricated about his person.

It should be noted that, the actions of Mr. Stanley since he was elected as Chairman Students’ Representative Council on the 14th December 2010 is guided according to the text governing the Students’ Union. We fail to understand why he has been arrested and presently undergoing psychological trauma.

The action of the Judicial Police does not portray a good image of our Country Cameroon to the public. Consequently we enjoin His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education as the number one in the Higher Education Ministry to ensure that, Mr. Eyongetta Stanley is duly accorded the rights he deserved as a student and student leader and therefore secure his immediate and unconditional release.

We are aware of the fairness and high sense of judgment by the Senior State Counsel Buea. We enjoin you to use the trust the Head of State delegated to your office and person to secure the unconditional release of the Chairman Mr. Eyongetta Stanley.

Considering that as the Chairman of the Students’ Union and the number one student on Campus and going by tradition, Mr. Eyongetta Stanley have to exercise his citizenship duty by leading the Students in UB during the 11th  February 2011 Celebrations. We do not pray for any problems during this day but we know his absence henceforth might be a major setback.

The Students in UB therefore request for his unconditional release.
